Our first stop will be at the attractive town of Battle, which gets it name from the Battle of Hastings, fought between Harold the Saxon king and William the Conqueror in 1066. It is said that William vowed that should he win the battle he would build an abbey. The abbey was built between 1070 and 1094, and the high altar is believed to have been placed on the spot where Harold fell. Today the Abbey ruins and the battlefield are cared for by English Heritage and are well worth a visit (entrance fees apply). The imposing Abbey gatehouse built circa 1338 can be seen as you look down the length of the High Street.
Battle has some notable Georgian buildings along its High Street. The cottages and houses near the Abbey date from around 1700. The parish church of St Mary was built in Norman times and for the most part is 12th century in construction. . There can be found a magnificent Romanesque nave, rare 14th-century wall paintings and the stunning Senlac commemorative stain glass window. At the Northern end of the High Street can be found the Almonry which was built in 1090 and now houses the Town Council and the Battle Museum of Local History.
Today, Battle is a thriving market town featuring Georgian and medieval cottages amongst a host of interesting shops, restaurants, historic pubs and tea-rooms. There will be time here to purchase lunch, browse the shops or visit the historic attractions.
After free time, we shall re-board the coach and make our way to Carr Taylor Vineyards in the picturesque Sussex countryside for a vineyard tour, wine tasting and cream tea !
The vineyard was established more than 30 years ago and quickly gained international recognition for its award winning English wines.
Enjoy a guided tour of the vineyard followed by a tutored wine tasting session providing the opportunity to try a selection of the vineyards wines. This will be followed by a cream tea.
About Carr Taylor Vineyard

David and Linda Carr Taylor realised their ambition of planting a vineyard when, in 1969, David purchased 21acres of land surrounding his family home in the beautiful East Sussex countryside. The initial planting commenced in 1971 with varieties such as reichensteiner, gutenborner, muller thurgau, dornfelder and the classic champagne varieties, Pinot noir, Pinot meunier and Chardonnay
The glorious summer of 1976 heralded the first commercially viable harvest for the vineyard and some 2000 bottles of Carr Taylor wines were produced! Since then Carr Taylor has gone from strength to strength winning their first award in 1983 in the International Wine and Spirit competition. The following years have seen a succession of medals in international competitions, accruing in excess of 150 awards.
In 1983 an exceptional harvest encouraged the vineyard to experiment with sparkling wine. This venture produced 10,000 bottles of traditionally fermented sparkling wine and resulted in the first commercially available Champagne Method English sparkling wine.
