#CoopFortnight is celebrating how co-operatives offer an altogether different way to do business, to support communities, and to support people.

Monday Jun 19, 2023

This year’s Co-operative Fortnight starts today and runs until 2nd July. The theme is “an altogether different way to do business”. The fortnight is aimed at celebrating all the different types of co-op across the world, such as the wine co-ops of Africa or the coffee co-ops of South America.

For Chelmsford Star Co-op, we’re proud to do things a little differently, such as reinvesting so much of our income back into the community, through donations made by our shops or grants distributed to local groups. We’ve been pushing Fairtrade, environmentally-friendly and cruelty-free products for as long as they’ve been around, but this year we are also one step further by thanking all health workers in the region too.

Throughout Co-op Fortnight, we’re giving all NHS staff in our trading area a free basket of Co-op Food shopping when ordered through our Snappy Shopper home delivery service*. Details will have been distributed by the NHS via their normal internal communications. We wanted to thank them for all that they do, and Co-op Fortnight seemed an ideal time to do it.

*NHS staff can receive a £14 discount from a £14+ basket spend on Snappy Shopper until 2nd June. Delivery/ service fee is still applicable.

This #CoopFortnight, we’re joining all the other Co-ops around the World to celebrate these differences.

Here are just some examples of how we support our members and communities:

  • We host many Co-op Clean Up Events within our trading area. Why not join us at our Chelmsford Event on Friday 30th June. Find out more here.

  • We assist many local groups and charities through our Community Fund. This is supported by the Essex Community Foundation. You can donate in the Charity pots in any of our stores and read more about how these grants have helped local people here.

A domestic-abuse refuge centre in Southend received a community grant to assist with their running costs from local co-operative, Chelmsford Star. Read more here.

  • We care about our local environment and the Society is conscious of the environmental impact that running the business on a day-today basis can have and we are celebrating these this Great BIG Green Week and Co-op Fortnight. Read more here.

  • We host many member exclusive offers within our stores. Currently members spending in food stores on Wednesday afternoons (1pm – 6pm) will save 10% off their shopping. Terms and exclusions apply.

We have regular speakers from the community attend our coffee mornings. Above is Stewart Rivers a retired Met Police Officer.

  • Our Funeral Team host regular free Bereavement Groups to help people that have lost someone close to them. Find out more here. They also host an annual remembrance event at Christmas time.

  • We regularly attend events, such as the Little Legs Festival in Braintree to promote healthy eventing and give away free fruit to the local children.

  • We work with many Essex based suppliers and local producers, including Shaken Udder, Tapp’d Cocktails and Rossi Ice Cream, which are available in our food stores. This helps contribute to 31p in every £1 being spent with us staying in Essex.
