Local Co-operative, Chelmsford Star held a Fairtrade and Local Food tasting event to support ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’ on Wednesday 6th March.
Fairtrade is all about better prices, decent working conditions and fairer terms of trade for farmers and workers in developing countries. It is something that the Co-op has been championing for over 20 years and it’s something we’re very proud of.
The ticketed event reached maximum capacity on the evening with over 70 people in attendance.
A vast selection of local food, including Shaken Udder Milkshakes, Barn Farm Drinks, Essex Garden Foods, Broad Oak Farms, plus Award Winning Natural Skin Care producer, Elixirs of Life were in attendance on the evening sampling their products.
Co-op Fairtrade chocolate, wines, orange juice, teas and coffees, alongside homemade banana bread, chocolate brownies and sausage rolls were also on offer and all received very positive feedback.
Kevin Bennett, Head of Membership and Marketing commented;
“The event helped us to showcase the range of fairtrade food and drinks that we have available within our 40 food convenience stores, which are located throughout Essex. It was fantastic that the event was not only raising awareness of Fairtrade and local food, but it was also raising money for our Charity of the Year”.
The ticket and raffle sales on the evening were all donated to our Charity of the Year; Alzheimer’s Society and £220 was raised on the evening.
