New law passed to tackle violence against shop workers

Wednesday Dec 22, 2021

We reported several months ago that Chelmsford Star Co-op, along with numerous other retailers and Co-operatives were campaigning alongside the Co-operative Party and trade union movements to ensure that assaulting a public-facing worker like a shopworker will become a specific aggravated offense. This campaign has now been won and is an incredible accolade for the #NotPartOfTheJob campaign.

This is a hugely significant milestone in turning the tide on violence and abuse against shopworkers.

However, work isn’t done, and we must ensure this change has the impact that shopworkers desperately need, in support of trade unions and fellow co-operatives.

So many people have worked so hard for this outcome: the shopworkers’ union USDAW, co-op retail societies, Alex Norris MP, Daniel Johnson MSP, and more.
