Coffee increases in popularity…
In the UK, we now drink approximately 95 million cups of coffee per day. 80% of UK households buy instant coffee for in-home consumption, particularly those aged 65 and older.
Ground coffee and single-serve coffee pods are becoming increasingly popular, particularly amongst millennials (aged 16 – 34) who account for 16% of all buyers.
On the high street, café culture has also continued to boom, 80% of people who visit coffee shops do so at least once a week, whilst 16% of us visit daily.

This increase in popularity is having a huge impact on sales of coffee pods in supermarkets. Pods are now worth £137,5 million with value up by an impressive 29,6%.
Reading the tea leaves…
Though coffee drinking is certainly on the rise, tea is still the most popular hot drink within the UK.
The UK Tea & Infusions Association (UKTIA) says 84% of the UK population drinks tea every day, so there’s no doubt the nation loves it – with milk too, apparently. UKTIA say around 100 million cups of tea are consumed daily, and roughly 98% of those brews are served with milk.
We are the third-largest tea drinking nation (per capita) behind Turkey and the Republic of Ireland.
However, tea is struggling right now. Sales are down 4,7% on volumes down 2,1% as consumers move away from an everyday brew to something more exciting.
But how do the Brits like to consume it? Milk no sugar, please is the most popular way to enjoy a brew, followed by milk with two or more sugars and then milk with one sugar. Men are much more likely to put a spoonful (or more) of the sweet stuff in their tea. Men are nearly 50% more likely to have two sugars and 40% more likely to have one sugar, compared with women.
