Chelmsford Star Assists Anglo European School on an Enterprise Initiative

Chelmsford Star Co-op, local supplier to the Society Dan Hull and Barclays Bank provided expertise to year 9 students (aged 14-15) at the Anglo European School in an event held in early March, to create and set up an ethical shop or café.

The school was embarking upon a new enterprise initiative which allows each year group to participate in activities relating to economic well being and financial capability. To this end the event was put together by the lower 6th students as part of one of their own learning modules.

More Essex Producers Join Chelmsford Star Co-op

Essex Co-operative Society Chelmsford Star is introducing more new local producers to its growing portfolio of Essex suppliers.

Preserve manufacture Wilkin and Sons has diversified into cakes and desserts and produces them from a bakery in Witham, known as Tiptree Patisserie. Part of their range which is now stocked by the Society is a selection of delicious individual cake bars under the “Yours to Enjoy” label and includes flapjacks, cakes and crunch bars.

‘Meet the Directors’ Event Sparks Members Interest in Getting More Involved!

Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society has just ran its annual ‘Meet the Directors’ evening as a means of an introduction to members on how to become more active in the corporate governance structure of the Society. This year there are ten seats available which will be filled at the Annual General Meeting held in the quadrant, Chelmsford on Monday 28th April.

Fairtrade Quilt Warms Many a Heart!

The raffle of a Fairtrade quilt has raised £318 for Chelmsford City Women’s charity, Safer Places.

Chelmsford Star Co-operative launched the Fairtrade initiative on International Women’s Day in 2012 (which also happened to fall within Fairtrade Fortnight), to produce possibly the UK’s first handmade Fairtrade bed quilt, made from Fairtrade Fabric.

School pool receives much needed funds!

Launched in July 1999, our Community Card Scheme has grown from strength to strength with many local groups reaping the financial benefits.

Today over 280 local community groups have opened a Community Card account, amongst them are schools, playgroups, sports clubs, charities, churches, scout groups and many others.

St John’s C of E Primary School based in Danbury has created a new milestone in the history of the Community Card by receiving the largest cheque we have ever awarded to a single Community Card group in one sitting, a total of £1170!

Chelmsford Star Kicks of Fairtrade Fortnight with over £700 raised for charities!

Chelmsford Star Co-operative recently held an evening event in support of Fairtrade Fortnight in its quadrant department store, Chelmsford.

Over 75 people attended the event, which is now in its tenth year and has the main aim to educate on the meaning of Fairtrade.  The Brambles restaurant in the store provided a delicious Fairtrade curry with desserts produced by local supplier, Tiptree Patisserie using Fairtrade chocolate and bananas as ingredients.

Ingatestone Co-op General Assistant Joy Miller retires after 20 years service

On Thursday 13th February, General Assistant Joy Miller retired from the co-operative food, Ingatestone after 20 years loyal service.

A very tearful Joy was presented a bouquet of flowers from Pauline Dodd, Society President, Barry Wood, Chief Executive Officer and Store Manager, Bruce Brown. Customers also came into the store with gifts for Joy, showing what a valuable member of the Ingatestone community she has become.

Argentinean Fairtrade Wine Representative to visit Braintree during Fairtrade Fortnight

Daniela Cedron from the La Riojana wine co-operative in Argentina is to visit numerous venues in the south of the UK during Fairtrade Fortnight (24th February – 8 March 2014). This includes the Brambles restaurant at the quadrant department store in Braintree on Thursday 27th February at 11am, where she will be speaking at the members coffee club.

German Evening is good for all!

Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society joined forces with local Rotary Groups in a fun shopping evening in quadrant Chelmsford, and raised £1450 for Charity.

Over 200 packed the store to enjoy a mini fashion show as well as sample local delights from Essex Food Producers. Co-operative Energy was on hand both during the day at the High Chelmer Shopping Centre as well as at the evening to offer advice and kindly donated £5 for every quote given. The Society also gave the Rotarians a cake to celebrate the British and Irish 100th anniversary.
