Southend refuge benefits from local co-op grant

Monday Mar 20, 2023

A domestic-abuse refuge centre in Southend has received a community grant to assist with their running costs from local co-operative, Chelmsford Star.

Safe Steps have had to develop their centre in Southend to cope with additional demand as cases of women fleeing their homes, often with children in tow, has increased in recent years. A grant for nearly £6,000 was approved by Essex Community Fund, of which Chelmsford Star Co-op’s donation was a major contributor.

Latest statistics show that 5% of adults (men as well as women) experience domestic abuse in the UK. If they find themselves needing to leave the home environment, danger to life can be very real. Keeping these individuals safe can be complex, particularly if children are of school age, and refuge centres like Safe Steps need all the help they can get.

If you, or someone you know, is experiencing domestic abuse call the Essex Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0330 333 7 444. Here you will find confidential help, support and advice. You can also find out more at www.essexcompass.org.uk
