The BIG Co-op Beach Clean removes 80kg of rubbish from our shoreline….

Tuesday Sep 26, 2023

Every September thousands of people across the UK head to our coastlines to take part in the ‘Great British Beach Clean’.

This year’s event ran between Friday 15th – Sunday 24th September 2023.

We pride ourselves at being at the heart of the community so naturally we wanted to be involved. In collaboration with The Marine Conservation Society, we chose East Beach, Shoeburyness as our location on Friday 22nd September this year.

We were lucky enough to have almost 100 volunteers attend from some of the following companies:

  • Leslie Clark
  • I.Projects Ltd
  • Oakland Care
  • Ecovadis
  • Nat West
  • Wearemapp
  • Shroders
  • Barclays

The weather was beautiful and after a briefing from Chelmsford Co-op’s Event Co-ordinator Julie Birkumshaw, the volunteers were kitted out with litter pickers, gloves and data information sheets.

We completed a two-hour clean along a 200m stretch of beach, plus some of the surrounding grass areas. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we all managed to collect approximately 80kg of rubbish.

Thank you to the Chelmsford Litter Wombles, KEGs School and The Southend Tourist Office for loaning us equipment.

Feedback included:

“Great day and we all thoroughly enjoyed it”.

“I’ve been coming for a few years, and this was the best one ever”.

“Great organisation and motivation from the Co-op team”.

“We came from London on our Community Day and had the best time for a great cause.”

Director Pauline Dodd commented:A very well organised event. The weather was perfect and so was the company, everyone was cheerful and friendly and lots of bags of rubbish were collected. Well done everyone Beach Cleaning at Shoeburyness today and a big THANK YOU to Julie and Emily at Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society for organising everything.”

Emma Green from the Marine Conservation Society commented: “It was lovely to meet you, and what a fabulous job you did. Can’t wait to come back next year.”
